Berg’s Lyric Suite contains impassioned music within its complex frame, a work of subtle structure and a sensuous, sonorous beauty. A vibrant directness, and an elegant precision are the hallmarks too of the music – and the conducting – of Oliver Knussen.
Knussen is a powerful advocate for one of his musical heroes, Stravinsky (his supercompressed piano concerto) and brings control and caprice to the fractured festivities of Ives’ mini-tone poem – a bone-chilling winter night enlivened by a barn dance.
Please note that Alexander Goehr’s ‘Marching to Carcassonne’ replaces Oliver Knussen’s new work for piano and orchestra in this programme.
A perfect summer evening’s entertainment – the music of Mozart performed by one of the world’s finest chamber orchestras. No one has better credentials to direct this concert than violinist Alexander Janiczek, himself a native of Mozart’s hometown Salzburg. He contrasts the Symphony No 21, written when Mozart was aged 16, with one of the composer’s last great symphonies – the dramatic No 39. The SCO’s virtuoso Principal Horn Alec Frank-Gemmill is the soloist in the Fourth Horn Concerto.

German violinist Florian Donderer, Concertmaster of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, makes his SCO debut as soloist and director in this delightful programme of classics. The Haydn Concerto demands great virtuosity from the soloist. It is performed here with two works inspired by the traditional dance music of each composer’s homeland: Dvořák’s wonderfully melodic Serenade for Strings – one of his most popular works – is, in turn, spirited, romantic and wistful. A perfect, uplifting summer evening’s entertainment.

Schubert composed his Octet after a year spent writing opera and striving to have it staged. His ears were full of the music of Carl Maria von Weber (the most successful German operatic composer of the day) and it shows in every movement of the Octet. What better to pair it with than Liszt’s spectacular and virtuoso fantasies and transcriptions of operatic hits?
Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings offers a transcendent close to an hour of music for the strings and brass of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. The music is dramatic and powerful. Shostakovich’s searingly heartfelt Chamber Symphony erupts in fiery bursts of musical violence. It finds consolation in Pärt’s warm, reflective Fratres.
There will be free live music before this concert and between this and the 9.30pm concert, performed by Live Music Now musicians. There will also be a pay bar available for refreshments. Please note that there will be no interval.
