Final sign off from Orkney

SCO players and staff have been busy blogging about their trip to Orkney for the St Magnus Festival over the past few weeks.  From concerts, conducting courses, composition workshops and much more, the Festival was a great success.  Here's a final look at their adventures.

Film and Music at St Magnus Festival

SCO Connect Director Lucy Lowe blogs about Film and Music, the St Magnus Festival project which brought together composers, conductors and players.

So...the morning after the night before. Actually it was quite a respectable evening except for my slight miscalculation over when taxis stop running. In actual fact a 40 minute walk at 2am is rather pleasant, especially when it’s still light and there’s some stunning scenery.

A Postcard from Sanday

David Chadwick, 2nd Violin, recuperates after the St Magnus Festival on the beautiful island of Sanday.

So, that’s it for the 35th St. Magnus Festival, I say roll on 50! My own festival experience was all building up to the SCO Strings concert at St. Magnus Cathedral. Not only was the venue spectacular (absolutely crammed full) and the programme exciting, it was directed by the superb Alexander Janiczek - talk about a winning recipe!

Putting at the Pavilion

The SCO's second tour to the Highlands included three great concerts, more stunning views and even a round of pitch and putt in Strathpeffer. To view the photo captions, click on the images below.

Aisling O'Dea back on the road

Aisling O'Dea, First Violin, joined fellow SCO players for a hike up Beinn Enaiglair on the way to Ullapool, the final concert in the Orchestra's second summer Highlands tour.

Take the High Road

From sheep shearing and stunning views of the Moray Firth, to a packed house at the Universal Hall in Findhorn, it was a great start to the Orchestra's summer adventures in the Highlands. To view the photo captions, click on the images below.

Wind Power Concert

SCO Connect Director Lucy Lowe continues her St Magnus adventures and blogs about the Wind Power concert

Tonight was the culmination of months of hard work for teachers and pupils involved who played as part of a wind orchestra for the St Magnus Festival Wind Power concert. They were joined by a host of professional musicians including the complete wind, brass and percussion sections of the SCO.

A whole lot of Wind Power

SCO Connect Director Lucy Lowe joined the players at the St Magnus Festival for two exciting, large-scale education projects.

As I write, I’m sitting in the Pickaquoy Centre listening to a massed wind band featuring musicians from all over Orkney, teachers, SCO Wind, Brass and Percussion, Pure Brass, Flutes en Route and Pipers Three.

In my Element

David Chadwick, 2nd Violin, continues his adventures in Orkney.

Our second concert on Sunday night went off with a bang (actually, a quiet double bass pizzicato) in Edward Harper’s Fantasia V, a piece premiered at the 1985 St. Magnus Festival. Of course, the headline act was the St. Magnus Festival Chorus, a chorus on a grand scale (around 160 members) who had been rehearsing for their performance of the Mozart Requiem since February.

Sleep is for Wimps

David Chadwick, 2nd Violin, presents a day in the life of a SCO player on tour...

5.10am - Too early to blog. Sentences impossible before tea.

6.15am – I’m checked in right through to Kirkwall & through security at Birmingham International Airport. Clocked up an impressive 3 hours of sleep last night, my concert at the Conservatoire was very enjoyable (as was post-concert reception).
