The SCO are delighted to collaborate with Scenic Art students at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) who have been helping create set elements for the upcoming family concert, The Great Grumpy Gaboon.
Gary Fry, Scenic Art Lecturer, has been working with the students who have been designing, building and painting brand-new set pieces for The Great Grumpy Gaboon concerts to be performed in Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness from 7-9 February.
"The students have been excited to engage with this particular project as its scale and content are not the usual. This is much smaller, bespoke and a lot of fun," said Gary.
"They would more often be working on theoretical designs and costing exercises, but here they get to work with a real client," he added.
A total of six students have been creating the pieces shown below, including one designer, two carpenters and three scenic artists.
Ava Henderson was the designer on the project and said, "The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is a prestigious and talented company so it’s an honour to get to design something that will be seen and enjoyed by the audiences of this travelling production."
"I took inspiration from my love of gardening. Putting my own twist on the different species found in my garden like the massive ferns and little toadstools."
"My hope is that the fresh whimsical portrayal resonates with the audience," said Ava.
We can't wait to see the final pieces on stage with the Orchestra! And you can see them come to life with the SCO this February. Tickets are available here.
Thank you to the RCS, Gary Fry and all the students who worked on this project:

Carpenters: Charles Haggarty, and Matthew Macmillan
