Larsen is a melodic, quite lyrically-orientated composer who has described her music as “American Vernacular” taking it's cues from the American language. Her music makes great use of tonal colours and textures; the three items on this disc are written as chamber works.
This album presents her 4th Symphony, a piece specifically for strings that implements that working philosophy and is a three-movement work.“Songs of Love and Light” is a setting of a cycle of five poems by May Sarton which directly makes use of American-English inflections.“Song From Letters” is a short cycle of five songs based on letters from Calamity Jane to her daughter Janey.
The soprano soloist is Benita Valente and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra is conducted by Joel Revzen.
Total running time: 54.57 minutes.
